SEBI Research Analyst Registration: Eligibility, Process, Fees and Documents

A Research Analyst (RA) provides research-based information, analysis, or recommendations relating to securities. In India, the activity is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) under the SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014, as amended from time to time.

A person intending to provide research services covered by the regulations generally needs to obtain the required registration unless a specific exemption applies. A SEBI registered research analyst can provide research reports and recommendations in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework.

The latest framework also requires research analysts to follow requirements relating to qualifications, certification, disclosures, records, conflicts of interest, client communication and professional conduct.

Who Can Apply for SEBI Research Analyst Registration?

The SEBI RA framework allows eligible individuals and non-individual entities to apply for registration. A sole proprietor can also apply as an independent research analyst, subject to fulfilling the applicable individual eligibility requirements.

Under the current qualification framework, an individual research analyst, principal officer of a non-individual research analyst, individuals employed as research analysts, persons associated with research services and relevant partners must satisfy the prescribed qualification and certification requirements.

The November 2025 amendment provides for a graduate degree or equivalent qualification, or a CFA Charter from the CFA Institute, along with relevant NISM certification; alternatively, a qualifying Post Graduate Program in the Securities Market (Research Analysis) from NISM may satisfy the qualification route specified in the regulations.

Eligibility Requirements for SEBI RA Registration

Before beginning the SEBI RA registration process, applicants should assess the following requirements:

Educational Qualification and Certification

The applicant and relevant persons associated with research services must meet the qualification and certification requirements prescribed under Regulation 7. NISM certification requirements continue to apply as specified by SEBI.

Financial Requirement

For an individual or partnership firm, the regulations prescribe minimum net tangible assets of ₹1 lakh. For a body corporate or LLP, the prescribed net worth requirement is ₹25 lakh.

Fit and Proper Criteria

The applicant must satisfy the applicable regulatory conditions and demonstrate the ability to conduct research activities in compliance with SEBI requirements.

Adequate Infrastructure

The applicant should have appropriate systems, resources and infrastructure for carrying out research activities and maintaining the required records.

SEBI RA Registration Process

The SEBI RA registration process involves preparing the application, submitting supporting information and completing the regulatory review.

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

First, assess the proposed business structure, qualifications, NISM certification, financial requirements and other applicable conditions.

Step 2: Prepare Documents and Policies

Prepare the application and supporting documents, including qualification certificates, certification details, entity documents, financial information, declarations and details relating to the proposed research activities.

Step 3: Submit the Application

The application is made in the prescribed Form A with supporting documents to the Administration and Supervisory Body for Research Analysts (RAASB). After scrutiny, the RAASB recommends the application to SEBI for registration.

Step 4: Regulatory Review

The application and supporting information are reviewed for compliance with the applicable regulatory requirements. SEBI or the relevant supervisory body may seek clarification or additional information where required.

Step 5: Pay Applicable Registration Fee

Once the application progresses towards approval, the prescribed registration fee is payable.

Step 6: Receive Registration

After the applicable requirements are satisfied and the registration fee is paid, SEBI grants the registration certificate subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

Documents Required for SEBI Research Analyst Registration

The exact documentation can vary depending on whether the applicant is an individual, partnership firm, LLP or company. Common documents and information may include:

  • PAN and identity/address proof

  • Educational qualification certificates

  • Relevant NISM certification

  • CFA qualification, where applicable

  • Professional experience details, wherever applicable

  • Constitutional documents of the entity

  • Financial statements and applicable net-worth/net-tangible-asset evidence

  • Details of business activities

  • Infrastructure and technology details

  • Compliance declarations and undertakings

  • Research and conflict-of-interest policies

  • Details of partners, directors or principal officers, as applicable

The application should be prepared carefully because incomplete or inconsistent information can result in queries during regulatory scrutiny.

SEBI Research Analyst Registration Fees

SEBI prescribes separate application, registration and renewal fees depending on the applicant category.

As reflected in SEBI's 2025 FAQ document, the application fee is ₹2,000 for individuals and partnership firms and ₹20,000 for body corporates, including LLPs. The registration fee for the first five years is ₹3,000 for individuals and partnership firms and ₹30,000 for body corporates/LLPs. Renewal fees for the subsequent five-year period are ₹1,000 and ₹5,000 respectively. Additional RAASB administrative fees may also apply.

Therefore, applicants should consider both statutory SEBI fees and other professional, certification and compliance costs when estimating the overall cost.

Benefits of Becoming a SEBI Registered Research Analyst

Obtaining SEBI registration establishes a regulated framework for providing research services. It can help an eligible professional or entity:

  • Operate within the applicable SEBI regulatory framework

  • Build greater transparency around research services

  • Establish a structured compliance system

  • Provide research reports and recommendations subject to applicable regulations

  • Develop a professional research business

  • Maintain appropriate disclosures and conflict-management procedures

Registration, however, also brings continuing responsibilities relating to disclosures, records, audits, client communication and conduct.

Post-Registration Compliance for SEBI RA

SEBI-registered research analysts must maintain ongoing compliance rather than treating registration as a one-time approval.

Important areas include maintaining prescribed records, conducting an annual compliance audit, making required disclosures, managing conflicts of interest and complying with applicable trading restrictions. Non-individual research analysts or research entities must also comply with the applicable compliance-officer requirements.

SEBI's framework also contains requirements concerning the use of artificial intelligence, including responsibility for client data security, confidentiality and integrity when AI tools are used in providing research services.
